DREAMS, DREAMERS and DREAMING

Illusions, Delusions, Internal Subconscious Images reached only upon ethereal wings soaring upon the Etherwind, beyond the conscious, deeper than the sub conscious into the realm of alternate realities, accessible only by  the most extraordinary dreamers. Then, and only then can one enter the elusive labyrinth Of.

TANGLEMIND

Rem is the state of ordinary dreams which is experienced by everyone, found in the superficial reaches of ordinary sleep cycles. Some experience nightmares but they too are but subsurfacial images most often based on conscious experiences. Where as, the dreams that manifest in that deepest region of the human mind, that place of alternate realities, to those who venture there is known as, Tanglemind.

Those who enter this realm are in themselves extraordinary people, those who journey through element of mind conditions beyond the mundane understanding of even the most enlightened practitioners of the human psyche. Research has yet to comprehend the nature of elements of the mind we so easily and incorrectly categorize as afflictions, disabilities, mental illness, dementia, day dreaming  and even insanity. States of alternate mind conditions designated as, Comas, Narcolepsy, Senility, Insane, Alzheimer's, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Autism.... No one seems capable of understanding these deeper, more enlightened states of altered conscience.

The Etherwhen Affair
The Hidden World Of Tozzy Tyler

Prologue

Tozzy Tyler was blind. This was confirmed by four eye doctors. Tozzy on the other hand said he wasn’t blind. He could see just fine and one day he tried to describe what he saw and too late realized it was a mistake. Now, not only did everyone think he was blind but they took him to a child psychologist who diagnosed him as being Schizophrenic as well and that, after further testing and assessment landed Tozzy in the care of an institute for the mentally impaired because all those knowledgeable and wise adults decided he could be a danger to himself and others if not under the constant watch of professional care givers for the mentally handicapped. And this, by the way, to great sorrows, was a cherished relief to Mr. and Mrs. Tyler who had neither the time, inclination, nor patience to deal with a mentally ill, handicapped child.
Tozzy was not born blind. When he was nine he was running along the street when quite suddenly his toe caught a crack in the sidewalk and he fell face first, breaking his left wrist and smacking his head with a loud crack on the concrete.
The doctors fixed the broken wrist and diagnosed Tozzy with a mild concussion. There was of course a rather nasty bruise above his eyes at first then grew to include both eyes, so he looked like a racoon for a long time and even after years there remained of faint trace of discoloration.
Two days after his fall Tozzy began getting terrible headaches and then one morning, after a couple of weeks he awoke to darkness and never saw the real world again. Six months later he was locked away and all but forgotten in the modern day version of the locked attic for unwanted children.
In defense of the institution they did begin a new level of education, teaching Tozzy how to function as a blind person, to read Braille and navigate his way about with a cane. Dealing with the supposed mental illness was something else because, you must understand, Tozzy Tyler was not mentally ill. He was or should I say he had discovered a whole new state of existence, aka, reality in which he was not only sighted but…. well…. I shall leave that point up to you to decide. Suffice for me to say, it was his very own and very hidden world which he could explore in the safe confines of the institute.
At first Etherwhen was just a movie like vision that formed on the back of his eye lids and he would watch for hours as stories developed and played out to grand ends. For a while it was like an interactive game with realistic 3D fields. Then one day as he walked along the corridor toward the library he step from his dark world of blindness crossing the threshold of imagination into the alternate reality of Etherwhen, as easily and simply as the sighted walk from one room to another.
He had seen Pavilion City before. He tried to summon the story that went with it but before he could two guardsmen bearing pikes accosted him. In raw authority they demanded to know who he was and where he came from.
Tozzy had to think quick. “I am Tozzy Tyler”, he used his real name because it was easiest to remember.
Before he could continue the two guards stepped back, lowered their pikes, and bowed. Together they pleaded. Forgive me My Lord. Our eyes have never beheld you, so we knew not who you are.”
“It’s all good soldiers. You have done well to challenge an intruder. Stand tall and take me to your Governor.” Tozzy was beginning to remember.
The guards stood straight and led the way to the interior of the city. In the centre stood the largest and most brightly decorated Pavilion.”
One of the guards advanced on the entrance and spoke quietly to the door watch who ducked inside and was gone for but a minute returning with the Governor.
Tozzy quickly searched his memory for stories about Pavilion City and luckily came up with the name of its Governor before he was pressed to repeat it.
“Ah. Governor Tashnar. Well met we are at a time such meetings are needed.
“The Governor studied this intruder for only a few seconds then bowed obediently. “Welcome My Lord Tozzy Tyler. But why are you at large and alone?” he queried suspiciously.
Tozzy smiled warmly. “What makes you think I am alone Governor Tashnar?”
Tashnar glanced about anxiously. “Of course. You will have guards and spies lurking among us since our last encounter was less amiable.”
“The last time we met you were at my feet, defeated in your attempt to gain control of Pavilion City.”
“Yes, My Lord but as you decreed yourself, I was not responsible since my mind was over powered by Mal Yssia your most cruel enemy.”
Tozzy nodded. All the stories he had witnessed on the back of his eye lids and had partaken in rushed into his memory and in them he was aware of being Lord Tozzy Tyler, Marquis of the Southern Desert and ever there was a struggle between he and the Sand Witches whose only desire was to rule the world in which they existed and could never leave.
“My Lord. You come unarmed at a time when another uprising is at hand.” Noted the Governor.
“I come unarmed to show you that I will trust you to hold to your pledge.” Tozzy Replied. “And I have come to request a task of you or should I say one of your best Sculkers. One that can be trusted at my back for I am venturing into an intrigue that will require my back be watched.”
“Indeed, My Lord I would go myself for in my day I was the best, but now I am old and slow. I choose her called Larqess for she is the best of the best and dearly loyal to My Lord.”
Tozzy remembered her.
Tozzy did not question Tashnar’s knowledge concerning the lay of things in Etherwhen. He knew of the treacheries and that was all that mattered. Mal Yssia, Queen of the Sand Witches was rallying again to claim rule over Southern Desert.
Sometimes Tozzy felt that maybe she should take her place as ruler of the desert, but it would not end there. She would rally hordes of soldiers and strive against all Etherwhen.
“But My Lord, is it wise for you to risk yourself when others are here at your command?” The Governor asked with a speck of sincerity.
Tozzy pondered the question for a moment then shrugged his shoulders but offered no spoken response. There were things he must do that he would trust to none other and the longest truth he held was that Governor Tashnar could still bend to the will of the Witch Queen for she could still bestow great powers on him should she rise victoriously to the Southern Desert Throne.
Tozzy took a step back and turned to the side. He heard the whisper of secrecy creep into the tent. Few in the world would have heard it. He said softly. “Let me see you Larqess. I cannot trust anyone who will not show themselves before me.”
And Larqess was as beautiful as he remembered.
Mr. and Mrs. Tyler sat across the desk from Doctor Elizyn Kates whose expression was one sad and dark.
She said in care-ridden voice, “I am sorry, but it seems Tozzy has gotten worse. Not only does he experience incredible bouts of dilusion, now his afflictions include narcolepsy. He may fall asleep at any time, suddenly, even while walking. He may remain asleep for a few minutes or hours. There is no rhyme or reason to it. What is most alarming is during these episodes he sometimes sleep walks. This condition is accompanied by insomnia, meaning he can not seem to sleep during regular hours. We may be forced to provide him with sleeping aids, which is why we requested this meeting. We require your approval and your signature. The sleeping aid, when needed will be administered with the evening pills. I doubt he will even notice.”
Mrs. Tyler inquired without emotion, “Is there a drug to curb this narcolepsy?”
“Not really. The drug available is often called the Zombie pill. We only use it on violent patience and Tozzy has never shown any aggression toward other patience or staff. I would not recommend it. In the long run it could co much more harm than good.” Dr Kates answered candidly.
Mr. Tyler said disinterestedly as he stood from the chair. “Do what ever it takes to keep him comfortable and under control.” Then he walked quickly from the room.
Almost sadly Mrs. Tyler said, “Please take care of him. I think you and your staff will be all he will ever have. I will sign the papers. I do not think we will make another visit for some time. We are leaving the country and won’t be returning for at least three years. You will of course receive the usually annual fee.”
Then she too stood and hurried from the office. Dr. Kates sighed heavily and filled the permission paper away. Then she sat there for a moment deciding what if anything she should tell Tozzy about his parents. She had just decided to be truthful when a tap came at her door and Tozzy was standing there with a sad smile on his lips.
“I heard most of it.” He said. “I won’t take sleeping pills. I would know if you added one to my evening meds.”
“I know, but you do have difficulty sleeping at night.” Dr. Kates replied.
Tozzy found his way to a chair and sat down. “This is where Mother sat.” he said wistfully.
Dr. Kates said, “You are very perceptive.”
“I can smell her perfume strongest here.” Tozzy said with a smile. Then he said frankly, “I am not crazy Dr. Kates.”
Dr. Kates replied, “I know Tozzy, but there something going on in your mind that I wish to explore. Your parents have signed the necessary documents that gives me permission to examine you. However, I would prefer that you agree.”
Tozzy studied the Psychiatrist for a long minute, holding her eyes in a searching gaze. The he said thoughtfully. I remember everything I experience. They may be delusions to you but to me they are real.”
Dr. Kates nodded objectively but did not speak.
“I would like a voice recorder so that when I come out of these…episodes I can record what has happened. It really is amazing and is very real to me while I am there in Etherwhen. Maybe it will help you to understand as well.” Tozzy concluded.
“I would like to use a sleep machine to monitor your dreams when you have an episode. I have noticed most last for at least an hour and often much longer.” Dr. Kates requested.
“Ok.” Tozzy agreed with a nod then stuck out his hand and said, “It’s a deal.” Dr. Kates smiled and accepted the hand.
“You’re going to write a paper probably and I will publish my stories, when I am old enough.” Tozzy said with a positive twist. The doctor smiled and nodded then she reached in a draw of her desk and produce a pocket mini USB voice recorder.
“I will make a file on my computer for you with its own password so you can save your stories, but I would like to hear them.” She offered.
“I’ll give you the password.” Tozzy replied excitedly.
Finally, Tozzy said, “I know when I am going to conk out about two minutes before it happens. There is a split second flash of light, then bam down I go. Its like falling through a tunnel. When I see the flash, I try and sit down before I fall down.”
I will fit you with a call band. When you see the flash just press the button. I’ll come find you.” Dr. Kates assured. Then they went off to the doctors sleep research lab.
